The library at Brancepeth Station in the Wairarapa was set up to provide reading for those who worked at the station. The catalogue provides an excellent indication of the literary influences upon colonial New Zealanders in the 1890s. This page of works by Charles Dickens and Sir Walter Scott is highly typical and suggests the extent to which New Zealanders remained part of the British cultural and intellectual world in the 19th century.
