Heather Masters was a pupil at the Canterbury School of Art in the 1930s and was exposed to a wide range of creative disciplines. She was accomplished at drawing and watercolour painting, and also designed wallpapers. Embroidery students completed samplers to show their mastery of different stitches. Masters made her sampler in 1932. She went on to become a leading exponent of the arts and crafts movement in New Zealand.
