Story: Public history

Hikoi Tahi Walking Tours, 2010

Hikoi Tahi Walking Tours offers several digital walking tour guides for visitors to the Bay of Islands. The tours – one of Russell (previously called Kororāreka) and one of nearby Flagstaff Hill – present a Māori perspective on local history. Aimed at the tourist market, the guides are available in English, German and French. The venture is typical of many public history projects – the walks were conceptualised and presented by people with history and other (for example web-design) skills, and developed with a non-specialist audience in mind.
