This map of Waikouaiti was drawn by Edward Shortland in 1843 and was reproduced in his 1851 book The southern districts of New Zealand. It includes the location of a site where moa bones were found. Shortland was a government official with a good knowledge of the Māori language and a keen interest in Māori life and traditions. His recordings of the southern Māori way of life, before major European settlement, remain an extremely important early anthropological work.
