David Tannock was superintendent of the Dunedin Botanic Garden and other council reserves from 1903 to 1940, and was responsible for the design and layout of the botanic garden in this period. He also published gardening manuals, which included designs for suburban gardens. These designs were included in Practical gardening in New Zealand (1934) and show his interest in compartmentalised gardens and the use of trellises and hedges to create private zones.
