This page is from the 1883 edition of Brett's colonists' guide and cyclopaedia. The guide was 830 pages in length and provided useful information for settlers in New Zealand. By the third edition, published in 1902, the guide was 1,208 pages long. Henry Brett had entered publishing through the newspaper business. He became sole proprietor of the Evening Star (later the Auckland Star) in 1876 and soon branched out into wider publications including an Auckland almanac and a gardening guide in addition to the colonists' guide.
