Research in the 1980s showed that a lack of basic sporting skills could lead children to perform poorly and lose interest in sport. This resulted in a new emphasis on skills training to better equip children in their chosen sport. The New Zealand Netball Association started a skills award scheme in which players who achieved a set number of points won an award. This is Melanie Lovell-Smith's chart from 1982.
