Story: National anthems

A loyal farewell

This programme for the official farewell to the third contingent of 'Rough Riders', bound for the South African War in February 1900, includes the words to all four verses of 'God save the Queen'. The function included performances of British patriotic songs along with two renditions of 'God save the Queen' – a reflection of the strong imperial sentiment that was aroused in New Zealand during the war.
