Story: Postage stamps

Centenary of philately

In 1988 New Zealand Post released this first day cover to mark 100 years of organised philately (the collection and study of stamps). The first day cover featured the whole painting of Queen Victoria by Edward Chalon, which the image on New Zealand's first stamps, known as ‘full-face queens’ or ‘Chalon heads’, was based on.
