Story: Veterans’ assistance

Veterans, Government House, Auckland

War veterans assemble outside Government House, Auckland, in 1898–99. Most of these men would have seen action in the New Zealand wars of the 1840s and 1860s. Many are likely to have also taken part in overseas wars such as the Crimean War of 1854–56, the 1857–59 Indian ‘mutiny’, or conflicts in China, Afghanistan, West Africa and elsewhere.
