The government carefully husbanded New Zealand’s overseas earnings (which were spent when imports were bought). Getting an import licence, even for the most ordinary articles, required an explanation. In this letter from 1949 a building supply firm’s manager spells out why the company needs another licence to import plasterboard three months after the previous one was issued.
