District planning map

This 1963 district planning map of Whanganui shows the city colour-coded into distinct zones for various uses. The Town and Country Planning Act 1953 zoned areas for specific land uses – such as industrial or residential. Part of the reasoning was to separate noisy, smelly or smoky industries from residential areas.
