Map of Christchurch, 1850

As Edward Jollie’s 1850 map of Christchurch shows, the town was laid out with public reserves around its four sides. All this land – except for Hagley Park and the Barbadoes St cemetery – was sold off. The proposed botanical gardens were later established in the Government Domain.
