The first Federation of Labour, known as the ‘Red Fed’, had its own newspaper, the Maoriland Worker. In early 1913 the Federation joined forces with the moderate wing of the trade union movement to create a much larger – and hopefully more powerful – organisation. This front-page cartoon from May 1913 shows a tram heading to Parliament and sending the anti-union Prime Minister, William Massey, tumbling into the street.
