Story: Modern mapping and surveying

Mosaic map of Mākiekie

This mosaic map of Mākiekie, near Palmerston North, was compiled by New Zealand Aerial Mapping as part of the NZMS3 series for the Department of Lands and Survey. A note (top left) points out that this is not an accurate representation of the land below and could be inaccurate by as much as 100 yards (91.4 metres), or 300 yards (274.3 metres) on hilly country. It does provide an image of the terrain and vegetation, however, that would be useful for planning purposes.
