Maps like this were published as part of the Department of Lands and Survey annual reports from 1878 to 1916. By 1890 most of the land had been covered by at least a minor triangulation survey; only a few places, mostly on top of mountain ranges and in south-west Fiordland, had yet to be surveyed at all. Block and section surveys were gradually extending over the country, from the populated areas outwards.
