The missionary John Butler drew up this ground plan of garden beds and dwellings for the Kerikeri mission station in 1820, and set about developing it. The garden plots were just under one third of a hectare in total, and comprised vegetable plots, fruit trees and a bed of hops. Although Butler left Kerikeri in 1823, his garden has been in cultivation ever since.
