Story: Kiwifruit

Kiwifruit cultivars

The kiwifruit is one of about 60 species of Actinidia. Horticulturalists imported a number of others in the 1970s for breeding fruit. Gold kiwifruit (7) were developed from A. chinensis (4). Grape-sized A. arguta (9) are sometimes available and are known locally as kiwiberries. The common kiwifruit grown in New Zealand is the Hayward variety (11) of A. deliciosa.
