Story: Ngāi Tahu

Ngāi Tahu’s founding ancestors

Ngāi Tahu’s founding ancestors

This whakapapa (genealogical chart) shows how Ngāi Tahu trace their descent, through Paikea, to Tahupōtiki. The son of Uenuku, Paikea lived in Hawaiki. It was here that his brother Ruatapu, shamed by their father, planned to kill all his brothers. Paikea escaped to New Zealand on the back of a whale. Ngāi Tahu share the story of Paikea with Ngāti Porou.
