Story: Kiore – Pacific rats

Kiore whakapapa

Kiore whakapapa

This whakapapa (genealogy) shows the traditional origins of kiore. Hinemataiti is the ancestor of kiore. Her mother, Pani, was also the mother of kūmara – she was impregnated with kūmara that Rongo-māui stole from his brother, Whānui (the star Vega). In turn, Hinemataiti stole kūmara from Pani while they were being stored in kūmara pits.
