A group of 11-arm starfish cluster on a cliff face. They are waiting in the salt water, just below the fiord’s top layer of fresh water. These large starfish are rapacious predators of mussels, but cannot survive in the surface layer where the mussels abound. They wait for a few days without rain, when the freshwater layer thins, and venture into the mussel zone to feast until it rains again.
