Story: Refugees

African MP Ibrahim Omer

Ibrahim Omer, from Eritrea, spent five years living as a refugee in Sudan before being accepted into New Zealand under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees scheme. He worked as a cleaner at Victoria University of Wellington before earning a degree at the same institution, then worked as a union organiser. He was elected to the New Zealand Parliament on the Labour Party list in 2020. In this clip from the end of his maiden speech in Parliament, he vows to fight for the millions of displaced people around the world.

Omer was the second New Zealand MP to have experienced life as a refugee, after Iranian-born Green Party MP Golriz Ghahraman, who was elected to Parliament in 2017.
