Ibrahim Omer from Eritrea became the first African-born MP in the New Zealand Parliament when he was elected from the Labour Party list in 2020. He began his maiden speech in Parliament by saying: ‘I’m an Eritrean. I’m a former refugee. I’m a Muslim. I’m a trade unionist and a living wage advocate. But most importantly I stand here before you today as a Kiwi bursting with pride.’
