Story: Television

Top town

Top town was an early version of reality television in which teams from small New Zealand towns competed against each other in unusual physical challenges. The programme screened for 15 seasons (1976–90) and was consistently popular. In this clip from the 1977 final in Whāngārei the contestants from Timaru and Woodville battle to carry buckets of water over a greasy obstacle course. The presenter shown at the start is popular TV personality Howard Morrison, and the compere is Paddy O'Donnell.
