Story: Television

Top town

Top town was an early version of reality television in which teams from New Zealand towns competed against each other in unusual physical challenges. The programme screened for 15 seasons (1976–90) and was consistently popular. In this clip from the 1977 final in Whangārei, contestants from Timaru and Woodville battle to carry buckets of water over a greasy obstacle course. The presenter shown at the start is the popular entertainer Howard Morrison, and the compere is Paddy O'Donnell.
