Neil Dawson's steel sculpture 'Chalice' was installed in Christchurch's Cathedral Square in 2001 to mark the new millennium and the 150th anniversary of Canterbury's foundation. The sculpture is 18 metres high, 2 metres in diameter at the bottom and 8.5 metres in diameter at the top. The metal is cut into the shapes of native plants indigenous to the area. 'Chalice' survived the Christchurch earthquake of February 2011, despite the severe damage to the nearby Anglican cathedral.
