In this excerpt from a 1989 documentary, Cowcocky diva, Malvina Major reflects on her decision to return to New Zealand to raise a family when her international singing career was on the rise. After winning the 1963 Mobil Song Quest and the 1965 Melbourne Sun Aria, Major went to England to study at the London Opera Centre and soon became a sought-after operatic soloist with companies around the world. She turned her back on that life in the 1970s, coming back to live in New Zealand, but returned to the international stage in the 1980s with great success. Honoured for her services to music and the community, in 1992 she established the Dame Malvina Major Foundation to support rising performing artists.
