Story: Libraries

Country Library Service, 1959

Video file

The Country Library Service (CLS) began in 1938. It had its own collection of books, which were circulated around the libraries of small rural towns and settlements by van-driving librarians. Book lovers living in particularly isolated spots could set up libraries in their own homes, filled with books from the CLS. This film from 1959 shows the kinds of places serviced by the CLS, and what life on the road was like for librarians.
