Story: Daily life in Māori communities – te noho a te hapori

Learning city routines

This clip from a 1967 newsreel shows young Māori arriving from rural districts to live and work in Wellington. The scale and speed of this post-war urban migration meant that many new arrivals found the transition from one way of life to another extremely difficult. The newsreel describes a programme run by Wellington Polytechnic to help rural Māori adjust to city life.
