The Indonesian crew of the Korean fishing vessel Melilla 203 left their ship at Lyttelton in November 2011. They claimed to be owed more than $1 million in wages and to have suffered abuse from the ship's Korean officers. This was one of a number of cases involving complaints from the Indonesian crews of Korean fishing vessels chartered by New Zealand companies to fish in New Zealand waters. In May 2012 the New Zealand government announced that within four years foreign fishing vessels would have to be reflagged. As vessels flagged in New Zealand, they would be fully subject to local labour, fishing and environmental-protection laws.
