Story: Chatham Islands

A royal visit

In 1957, while on a brief tour of New Zealand, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Chatham Islands at his own request. He was the first member of the British royal family to set foot there. A highlight of his day was a meeting of the Chatham Islands Racing Club. As well as viewing the horse races, he mingled with locals and joined them at a hāngī.
