Story: Chatham Islands

A royal visit

In December 1956, while on a tour of New Zealand, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Chatham Islands at his own request. He was the first member of the British royal family to set foot there. A highlight was a meeting of the Chatham Islands Racing Club. As well as watching the horse races, he mingled with locals at a hāngī.
