Story: Conscription, conscientious objection and pacifism

Waihopai protest, 2008

This television news clip describes the 2008 peace protest at Waihopai, near Blenheim. Three men entered a top-secret defence communications base and damaged the spherical cover of a satellite dish in protest at the US-led ‘war on terror’. In court the peace activists did not deny their actions but argued that the US military controlled the Waihopai base and that it contributed to war and torture in Iraq. The jury acquitted them on all counts.
