The importance of maintaining face on the international stage is a critical part of the pressure a multilateral organisation can bring to bear. It was one motivation for New Zealand's post-Second World War response to Western Samoa's firm and persistent push for self-government. Involvement in the decolonisation of the island nation was also important for the United Nations. In 1947 its mission to Western Samoa was the first important step taken by the UN's newly established Trusteeship Council. The arrival of the UN mission is shown here.
