Story: Royal family

Queen Elizabeth II at Waitangi, 1990

In this 1990 news footage, Queen Elizabeth II is shown arriving at Waitangi during events marking the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. A variety of responses to royalty can be seen. The entourage supporting the queen included several Māori dignitaries, notably Governor-General Paul Reeves. Her barge was escorted by the ceremonial waka (canoe) Ngātokimatawhaorua. Once on shore she is greeted by a welcoming haka party. Protesters, both Pākehā and Māori, can be seen holding a banner proclaiming 'Honour the treaty'. After the queen landed, one of the protesters threw a black T-shirt at her; this was picked up by Reeves.
