In this clip from the documentary Whāngai, Sharon Ferretti, a Pākehā married to a Māori, talks about raising her grandson, Taipari Rikihana. Taipari lived with his grandparents for most of his chldhood, since this arrangement suited the entire extended family. Whāngai (unofficial adoption, usually within the extended family) is a traditional practice in Māori child-rearing, still common today.
