Story: Ngā tuakiri hōu – new Māori identities

News protest

A long succession of protests and other actions led to the establishment of Māori Television and a national network of Māori radio stations. Earlier, the predominantly English-language TV One had broadcast a Māori-language TV news programme, Te Karere. In 1995 the channel announced it was suspending broadcasts of Te Karere. The station's own six o'clock news broadcast was then disrupted when a group of protesters led by Ken Mair broke into the studio just before airtime. Watch a TV One news clip of this dramatic incident.
