Story: Gender inequalities

Teaching deaf children

Within the Catholic Church there were whole orders – generally single-sex – devoted to one kind of service or another. In this film clip a Dominican nun is teaching deaf children to speak at St Dominic's School for the Deaf in Island Bay, Wellington, probably in 1949 or 1950.
