From the late 20th century it was less common for children to play rough games at school because of government health and safety policies. However some schools reacted against this and reintroduced an element of risk to school playtime. These boys at Hereworth School in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, play roughly with one another in 2008. Principal Ross Scrymgeour said it was important for children to learn about sensible risk-taking through play, and for boys to express themselves physically.
