Māhia off-limits

The beaches around Māhia are popular with tourists and holiday makers. As this news clip from 2003 shows, problems arise when visitors do not respect private property, and in particular Māori land, which often contains sacred sites such as urupā (burial sites). It is inappropriate to camp on or near urupā.
