Story: Hydroelectricity

Waitaki opposition

Waitaki First was the organisation set up to oppose Project Aqua, and went on to oppose the North Bank Tunnel Project, Meridian Energy’s next proposal for the South Island’s Waitaki River. Chairperson Dr Helen Brookes, interviewed in 2003 during the fight against Project Aqua, argued that there were other ways of generating electricity. In 2004 Meridian pulled the plug on the project.
