The ganger and the contractor

In 2007 Peter and Elsie Lyon ran New Zealand’s largest shearing contracting business for fine wool. They were based in Queenstown. Here, Peter visits one of his gangs, which is at work on Mt Nicholas station on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. He discusses progress with Kelly Hokianga who is the head shearer, or ganger, and is responsible for the day-to-day liaison with the owner of Mt Nicholas.
