During their 1846 journey down the West Coast from Golden Bay to Taramakau, Charles Heaphy, Thomas Brunner, their Māori guide Kehu and Rover the dog climbed the Te Miko cliffs using an old Māori ladder consisting of pieces of rātā lashed together with flax.
