Story: Ngā manu – birds

Baiting a weka

Video file

Ngāi Tahu leader Sir Tīpene O’Regan demonstrates the method used to capture a weka. The tari (noose on a rod) is held out, with bait behind to entice the bird. Weka were easily caught using this method, though it did not work so well on this occasion.
