Story: Cartooning

Lodge Laughs – rugby, racing and beer

Nevile Lodge contributed his 'Lodge Laughs' cartoons to the Evening Post from 1947 to 1988. While he often dealt with political events, Lodge Laughs were best known for their commentary on New Zealand society. Lodge was particularly adept at portraying the 'rugby, racing and beer' culture of the late 1940s to 1960s, as shown in this cartoon on the 'six o'clock swill'. In the accompanying sound clip Lodge discusses his cartooning work processes.
