Universal Postal Union centenary stamps, 1974

Universal Postal Union centenary stamps, 1974

These stamps were issued in 1974 to commemorate the centenary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The stamps depict the symbol of the UPU and the clock tower in Berne, Switzerland, site of the first International Postal Congress in 1874. At the congress a treaty was signed establishing the UPU, which enables free transit of mail throughout the world. New Zealand signed up to the UPU in 1892.
