This bridge is strung across a stream on the Rakiura Track on Stewart Island. Such bridges save trampers from getting their boots and socks wet, and allow them to cross a river when it is in flood. On popular tracks most river crossings are bridged, but even small creeks can become swollen after a few hours of rain. It is always risky to cross a flooded creek or river – this is the most common cause of death for trampers.
