On Friday 17 March 2006 there was a sudden, explosive eruption at Green Lake. It started at 8.21 a.m. and continued for up to 30 minutes. This is the view from an RNZAF Orion on 21 March. Although steam is rising from the lake, by this time several of the vents that erupted initially had been drowned, as the lake level rose 6–8 metres. Thermal activity gradually declined from April 2006.
