This is the first finding of a hitherto unknown population of snipe, discovered on tiny Jacquemart Island in 1997 by James Fraser, Jeremy Carroll and Dave Barker. After the eradication of rats from nearby Campbell Island, these snipe are rapidly increasing. The Campbell Island snipe was named Coenocorypha aucklandica perseverance in 2010.
