The southern splendid perch (Callanthias allporti) is not quite as spectacularly coloured as its relative found in more northern waters, the splendid perch (Callanthias australis). It has distinctive trailing extensions to its tail, with touches of yellow showing around the head. It is found mainly below 25 metres, but in Fiordland, where these two individuals were photographed, it often appears in much shallower water. It is found around the lower South Island, the Chatham Islands and the Snares.
