Born in New Zealand in 1929, Fred Hollows moved to Australia in 1960 to take up a position as an eye specialist. Within five years he was the head of the eye department at Sydney Hospital. His work with Aboriginal people in Australia, and with communities in Eritrea, Nepal and Vietnam, has helped restore the sight of thousands. He was ‘Australian of the Year’ in 1990.
