The common sole (Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae) is another member of the flatfish family, Pleuronectidae, also known as right-eyed flounders. Endemic to New Zealand, the sole is found from Cape Rēinga to Stewart Island and also at the Chatham Islands. They are known to Māori as pātiki rori. They live on muddy and sandy bottoms in estuaries, harbours and bays. Their excellent camouflage makes them hard to see. These flatfish can partially bury themselves in sand by rippling their side fins, making them even harder to spot.
